What's the best way for me to back-up my hard drive (of these options)?

Question: I have been looking into my options for backing up my hard drive. I have tons of pictures on my laptop and all of them are very important but they are slowing down my computer big time! Besides, I know I need to back everything up because I lost stuff on my last computer and it was terrible.

Here are my questions:

1. Is it necessary for me to shell out the money (I don’t have) right now to buy a good backup hard drive for my computer or is backing up online just as sufficient? I like the idea of an online backup because I could access the info from anywhere and if I buy a hard drive, there is the possibility of that failing too, right? What are the negative aspects to online backup? Which is better?

2. Which is better for online backup, Carbonite or Mozy and why?

3. If you are suggesting I go with the online backup, is there a better service provider out there that I have not seen yet or are Mozy and Carbonite the best?

Question: Whats the best online storage?

My budget allows for .

I don’t like carbonite because you can’t backup from external devices.-This is very important to me because I don’t have a lot of space on my computer so I’m using an external hard drive.

I would like unlimited space.

I would prefer to pay by the year instead of the month. I would like to upload folders and subfolders and not just files.

Best way to create file backup before a reformat?

Question: I am updating an HP laptop from Windows Vista Home to Windows 7 Pro (of course I cant just update). I have about 80GB of photos and videos to backup as well as general documents. While I do own two external harddrives I would like an easier (read faster and less hassle) solution for a backup. I dont want to miss items, and I was wondering if one of the online services might provide a solution? I dont mind spending a few bucks to save the 8hours of copying it would take to get the 80GB to my external. I do already have photo backups on DVD, but still….

Ideas? Could I use a carbonite/Mozy type service? WIll it create an issue with an online storage if I change the OS?
